Tommy Makem singer, storyteller, actor, bard and songwriter, was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from The University of Limerick in December 2001 for his ambassadorial role in representing his country, its people, culture and traditions in concert halls across the world.

Recognition of Tommy Makem's ability to creatively fuse folk/traditional music with a modern idiom has come from many sources. He has received many prestigious awards including an honorary doctorate from the University of New Hampshire and continues to work on behalf of Irish culture.
